Snorkeling masks 2019 – Mares Sea Vu Dry

Full-face snorkel masks are available in all shapes and sizes. This is what the DuikeninBeeld testing team thought about the SeaVu Dry mask from Mares (expected release in the fall of 2019).

Mares’ snorkel mask really stands out: the snorkel is wider than those on all of the other masks yet is still easy to attach. This mask also has a less bulky appearance than some of the other snorkel masks thanks to the location of the purge valve and the lack of a colored chin piece.

The silicone edge of the mask is very flexible and has a comfortable feel. The straps are also made of silicone and have to be adjusted to the right length before you can put the mask on since they can’t be tightened once the mask is on. It seems like the buckles attached to the mask have been placed at the wrong angle making it impossible to tighten the straps while you’re wearing the mask.

Once we got the snorkel mask on, the breathing comfort is noticeable straight away. The way the separate channels for inhaled and exhaled air work is easily visible. The part under the orinasal pocket fogs up and the part above it near the eyes doesn’t, the way it’s supposed to work. The technical aspects of the separate airways have clearly been well-thought-out.

The mask’s soft silicone is comfortable and forms a good seal, but the testers did feel a mounting ridge pressing against their foreheads. The mask doesn’t fog up in the water and the position of the buckles is less distracting than it was at the surface.

Unlike other masks, the field of vision is oval, and while this isn’t distracting, it doesn’t increase the size of the field of vision which is more or less average.

The Sea Vu Dry snorkel mask works well and scores high when it comes to breathing comfort. If the mask fits properly, it doesn’t fog up and the silicone forms a good seal with the face. Adjusting the straps however is a time-consuming task, but once it’s on, it fits well. In that sense, it’s more practical not to loan the mask to others and reserve it for personal use only so you only have to adjust the straps once.

If you plan to buy a snorkel mask, try it on first and better yet, try it before you buy it.

Happy snorkeling!
